The Region of York announced it has committed close to $14.7 million in funding this year as part of a multi-year total $342 million going to the area’s four hospitals up to 2031.

Annual funding amounts from the region are adjusted for hospital performance and assessment growth.

They are also divided among Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital, Markham Stouffville Hospital, Southlake Regional Health Centre and Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital, the latter of which is set to open in 2020.

“This year, the contribution is nearly $14.7 million to fund hospital capital projects providing residents with improved access to appropriate and timely health care,” York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson said in a statement Friday, April 20.

“Protecting public health is a core value of the 2015 to 2019 strategic plan and we are on track to meet our commitment to our hospitals and to our communities at large,” he added.

According to the region, the 30-minute average target off-load time – calculated from when an ambulance arrives at hospital with a patient to the time hospital staff assume patient care – were met by hospitals in 2017.

If the 30-minute off-load target is not achieved, capital funding provided to the hospital may be reduced to address operating costs incurred by York Region Paramedic Services to maintain response time targets.

“As York Region grows to welcome new families and businesses, we need to continue providing improved access to health care,” said Town of Richmond Hill Mayor David Barrow, Chair of Finance and Administration.

“The contribution, combined with the off-load standard, helps ensure the Region and local hospitals work collaboratively to provide timely health care assistance to those who need it.”
