Residents of Markham’s Charity Crescent are alarmed after a metal leaf from Charity, the controversial cow-sculpture-on-stilts, fell off the statue over the weekend.
Danny Da Silva, who lives on Charity Crescent and who is one of several neighbours who wants the statue moved — which council has agreed to — alerted the city to the issue.
“We assume that during the wind storm of last week, one of the maple leaves from the Charity Crescent sculpture came loose and landed outside the orange safety fence," Da Silva said in an email to the town. "Thankfully, nobody was hurt, but now the city must act in order to ensure the safety of everyone who lives in the crescent and those visiting the sculpture. This sculpture is not suitable or safe anywhere without serious re-examination; the sculpture is falling apart in less than a year.”
“This leaf is the size of my head, weighs over half a pound, and is very pointy, so use your imagination,” said Da Silva.
Councillor Karen Rea voted to move the statue from Charity Crescent last September, but now doesn’t want it located anywhere in Markham.
“I had concerns about the wind when it was initially on our agenda," she said. "Considering what has happened, I believe Charity should be removed and not relocated to any public property, as this cannot ever happen again."
