The City of Markham is honouring the victims of the Humboldt Broncos Jr. A hockey bus tragedy with a vigil at the Markham Civic Centre, 101 Town Centre Blvd., on April 11 at 7 p.m.

The City of Markham is encouraging hockey players and members of the hockey community to wear their jerseys and bring sports equipment, hockey sticks and other memorabilia to leave at the Peace Flame outside the Civic Centre to pay tribute.

“Hockey is a part of the fabric of what it means to be Canadian," Mayor Frank Scarpitti said in a statement. "This unimaginable tragedy has devastated the Humboldt community; families have been changed forever and a nation is grieving. It is important to come together, show our support and to remember.”

The Saskatchewan bus crash, which occurred April 6, killed 15 and injured 14.

All flags will be lowered to half mast at City of Markham facilities from April 9 to 13 in honour of the 15 lives that were tragically lost and in support of the survivors, families and Humboldt community.

Books of condolences will also be available for the public to sign at the Markham Civic Centre and at seven of Markham's community centres.
