York Region CAO's salary soars past $300,000: Sunshine List
CAO salary jumps 4% in 1 year, public health nurses get 3% over 2 years

York Region’s chief administrative officer’s salary has jumped over $300,000.

Bruce Macgregor, who oversees a budget of $3 billion providing services to 1.2 million residents, took home $310,620 in 2017 according to the Sunshine List, the annual list revealing public service salaries over $100,000 showed.

He also had taxable benefits of $14,059.

That’s a 4.19 per cent increase over his 2016 salary of 298,125.

Last month, the region’s public health workers negotiated a 3.1 per cent increase over two years.

Meanwhile, another 11 regional employees earned more than $200,000 in 2017.

Regional chair Wayne Emmerson’s salary was $217,864, with taxable benefits of $17,635. In 2016, his salary was $211,968.

Medical officer of health, Dr. Karim Kurji, earned $274,625 in 2017, with taxable benefits of $12,466. That compares with his salary of $274,812 in 2016.

Associate medical officer of health, Dr. John Richard Gould, was paid $248,377 in 2017. He also had taxable benefits of $1,000. In 2016, his salary was $248,133

Treasurer Bill Hughes took home $232,087 and had taxable benefits of $12,21 in 2017. The year before, his salary was $218,959.

Dino Basso, commissioner of corporate services, Erin Mahoney, commissioner of environmental services, each earned $229,726 and had taxable benefits of $12,212 in 2017.

A year earlier, Basso was paid $218,441 and Mahoney was paid $219,994.

Regional solicitor Joy Hulton was paid $228,134 and had $8,432 in taxable benefits in 2017, compared to her salary of $204,446 in 2016.

Transportation commissioner Paul Jankowski was paid $215,420 and had $16,136 in taxable benefits in 2017. He was on Vaughan’s Sunshine List in 2016.

Associate medical officer of health, Dr. Lilian Yuan, earned $209,405 in salary and $966 in taxable benefits in 2017, compared to a salary of $238,012 in 2016.

Sharon Kennedy, executive director of human services, was paid $208,587 in 2017. She was not on the list in 2016.

Cordelia Abankwa, general manager of social services, was paid $200,876 and had taxable benefits of $767. She wasn’t on the list in 2016.

The list was introduced in 1996, If adjusted for inflation, the threshold to make the list would be $151,929.
