Two people have been rushed to hospital after a fire erupted at a Thornhill home the morning of March 22.

Vaughan firefighters were called to 30 Toledo Cr., in the Bathurst Street and Steeles Avenue area, at 9:19 a.m.

Upon arrival, firefighters were met with heavy flames pouring out of a second-floor window at the front of the home, Deputy Fire Chief Deryn Rizzi said in an email just after 10 a.m.

They launched an aggressive attack to extinguish the blaze on the second floor and in the attic area, she added.

The fire was under control by just before 10:30 a.m., Fire Chief Larry Bentley said in a phone interview.

“We’ve had two occupants transported to hospital with smoke inhalation and one of them has significant second-degree burns,” he said.

Few other details about the occupants of the home are known at this time.

It’s still too early to say how extensive the damage is to the home and how much it will cost to repair, Bentley said.

“I think it will be substantial,” he said. “One of the issues we have down there is that there is cellulose insulation in the attic so ... we’ll put a definitive area of what has to come out and it all has to come out because fire will travel through that cellulose insulation to all places. (It’s) labour intensive.”

The cause of the fire will be investigated by a Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service investigator, Rizzi said.
