Morning house fire in Vaughan sends 2 people to hospital
28 firefighters, 6 trucks respond to Woodbridge blaze

Two people were rushed to hospital with undisclosed injuries and four others are being treated at the scene of a house fire in Vaughan Monday morning.

A firefighter, whose helmet was melted by the intense heat of the blaze, was also assessed at the site of the fire but declined to go to hospital, said Vaughan Deputy Fire Chief Deryn Rizzi.

Vaughan Fire and Rescue was called to a structure fire at 6 Ed Quigg Way in Woodbridge's Sonoma Heights neighbourhood at around 8:34 a.m. Monday, March 19.

Rizzi said six people were in the house at the time of the blaze and witnesses said people could be seen leaving the building.

She said two 9-1-1 calls came in alerting Vaughan Fire and Rescue to the fire where heavy black smoke was seen pouring from the front door and the rear of the home.

A neighbour who called 9-1-1 and approached the burning building told Rizzi, "I realized if I went in there I wasn't going to come out."

The man, reportedly, helped talk a 25-year-old woman into coming out of the second-floor of the smoke-filled building.

"Firefighters arrived on scene, saw heavy smoke conditions from the rear. They made entry from the front door and did fight a fire in the main floor kitchen, then searched all three floors," said Rizzi.

She added there was "heavy flame involvement on the second floor which moved into the attic. Fire suppression activities are ongoing. Firefighters are protecting houses on each side. There is a lot of smoke," Rizzi added.

Rizzi said six trucks were dispatched to the fire where a total of 28 firefighters were on scene.

Damage to the home is estimated at more than $500,000.

The Ontario Fire Marshal's office has been called to investigate the blaze.
