Five Markham things to look forward to in 2018:

  1. Provincial election in June: With a number of ridings up for grabs, Markham could hold the balance of power in Ontario if it’s a close race between the major parties for power. It promises to be interesting in Markham-Thornhill, Markham-Unionville and Markham-Stouffville come next June.

  2. Municipal election in October: Always a major event every four years, it’s likely this time a few of the longtime councillors may decide to call it a day. With several councillors running provincially, there could be a set of new faces around the council table by the end of 2018.

  3. Charity the cow on stilts sculpture: It appears the issue is resolved with Markham council electing to move the controversial eight-metre high stainless steel sculpture on Charity Crescent in Cathedraltown some time in 2018. But donor Helen Roman-Barber may have other ideas. Stay tuned, this issue may not be over yet.

  4. Markham Downtown: It continues to develop at a rapid pace with new highrises proposed, cranes on site and residents worried about the height and scope of buildings along the Highway 7 corridor between Warden Avenue and Kennedy Road. The most dramatic changes in Markham are in this area and it bears watching in 2018.

  5. Stop the Horns: The completion of the Stop the Horns process is due in 2018. The first five crossings were due to be finished by the end of 2017 and it’s believed by the summer of 2018 the sound of train horns coming through Markham will finally be silenced after years of work.
