5 things to look forward to in Vaughan in 2018
Elections, Marco Muzzo, Vaughan subway and marijuana store are big issues for 2018

  1. Provincial election in June: With a number of ridings up for grabs in Vaughan including Vaughan-Woodbridge, King-Vaughan and Thornhill, the area could help determine who wins the provincial election. Look for a tough battle between PC candidate Michael Tibollo and Liberal Steven Del Duca in Vaughan-Woodbridge.

  2. Municipal election in October: Always an interesting race in the city, there will no doubt be some tough battles and it could be very intriguing if some big names run for regional council seats. Look for a number of former candidates to come back and challenge incumbents for their positions.

  3. Marco Muzzo: Perhaps Canada’s most notorious impaired driver, Muzzo, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison in February 2016 for a September 2015 crash that killed three children and their grandfather, is eligible for day parole in November 2018. Look for howls of outrage from the public if he gets it.

  4. The Vaughan subway: It opened on Dec. 17, but the full impact of the six-stop subway extension with stops at Steeles Avenue (Pioneer Station), Highway 407 and Vaughan Metropolitan Centre in Vaughan won’t really be felt until 2018. It will take thousands of cars off the road every day and change the way people commute.

  5. Vaughan marijuana store: Will it be open as of July 1, 2018? It’s a fair question as we enter 2018. The municipality was selected as one of the first 14 cities to host a legal marijuana store when the drug becomes legal as of July 1. But there has been little progress to date on the issue. Look for meetings and discussions to continue early in the new year and a decision by spring.
