Death, taxes and construction projects going over budget. As construction on the Stouffville Leisure Centre and library expansion nears completion, council approved additional costs to complete the project after staff said it experienced “extraordinary” weather delays.
Staff indicated several items were taking the project over earlier estimates, including a gas line replacement, HVAC system, commercial kitchen and audio-visual equipment, furniture and IT equipment.
Staff estimated the total budget of the project, which is scheduled for completion in March, at $17.6 million. Up until the council meeting Jan. 16, council had approved $16.8 million for the project. Council originally approved a budget of $15.4 million for the project in 2015. The budget included costs of design, management and construction.
The previous edition of town council spent much of its last year in office, 2013-14, putting a plan in place for the expansion of the Stouffville Memorial Park building, which includes a two-storey library, second indoor pool and dedicated area for the 55+ Club for seniors.
In July 2015, the new council approved a revised plan that did not include a second indoor pool or area dedicated to the seniors.
