New line, same old problems: commuters frustrated with delays on TTC subway extension

It was years in the making and cost the city $3.2 billion. The new Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension opened to a great deal of fanfare on Dec. 17 and promised commuters ease and time-savings. But so far, the line isn’t performing to expectations.

Many riders have complained about slow trains, trains stopping at stations for long periods of time, and trains going out of service.

Last night was no exception.

The TTC said there are many factors that contribute to delays on the subway line and admitted to working out “growing pains.”

“We have some schedule adjustments we’ve had to make on the extension since it opened, and we’re doing some training as well, so there have been some delays,” said TTC spokesman Stuart Green.

“There have been an increase in delays since the extension opened, but that was also weather-related. About an hour and a half delay yesterday was because of a signalling issue, which we have since resolved — and we think we found a permanent solution for that.”
