The number of licensed child care spaces in York Region is set to climb by 54 with the addition of three dedicated rooms at two local schools.

The provincial government announced Dec. 18 that Wilclay Public School in Markham will be renovated to create 15 new toddler child care spaces and 24 preschool spaces while EEC Le-Petit-Prince in Vaughan will get an addition to provide 15 new toddler spaces.

It's part of Queen's Park's push to create 45,000 new, license child care spaces across Ontario at a cost of up to $1.6 billion for capital projects alone.

Of that, $231 million is being spent in 2017-18 to help create 493 new child care rooms in 188 schools across the province, according to a news release.
