The TTC is giving everyone a free ride on Dec. 17, the first day of service for the new Line 1 extension into York Region.

The one-day free-for-all is Ontario’s way of celebrating the largest expansion of Toronto’s subway system in nearly 40 years and will be funded by the province.

Steven Del Duca, Minister of Transportation, along with John Tory, Mayor of Toronto and Josh Colle, TTC Chair, made the announcement on Saturday at Sheppard West station.

The Line 1 extension adds six new subway stops in York region. The new subway terminus at Vaughan Metropolitan Centre is about a 42 minute ride from Union station and students will be able to take transit all the way to York University for the first time.

The “Your ride’s on us” initiative is only a 24-hour deal and fares will be enforced as usual on Monday.
