A brand new link in the transit chain opened Monday as the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Bus Rapidway Transit Station opened adjacent to the centre's subway station.

The new station, which will be fully operational in concert with the subway, this Sunday, Dec. 17, will connect directly with subway riders through escalators and elevators under Highway 7. It will also connect to the SmartCentres Place Bus Terminal when it opens next year.

Long a landmark along Highway 7 near Jane Street with its arch over the highway, the station's canopy covers all the bus rapidway lanes.

"This is a crucial segment of the Viva BRT (bus rapidway transit) ... at this transit hub just six days away from the official opening of the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension, to open this segment, this really and truly is wonderful," said minister of transportation and Vaughan MPP Steven Del Duca.

"For the first time ever, the subway will be leaving the 416, but we know it will not be the last time," he added.

Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua said the project was "truly transformational for this city, for York Region."

Mary-Frances Turner, Metrolinx CEO, said that even though the terminal still appears to need a considerable amount of construction work despite a Dec. 17 opening, it will be completed by opening day.

“It will be done,” she assured.
