Garbage collection rates for single-family homes will rise with inflation, and water rates will again be hiked by 5 per cent.

The rates were set at a council meeting this week and followed the recommendations and earlier direction of city staff.

Approved garbage collection increases are: $4.99 more for small bins; $6.06 for medium; $8.23 for large; and $9.55 for extra-large. The new rates would be $254.66 for a small bin; $309.14 for medium; $419.85 for large; and $486.99 for extra-large.

Multi-residential units will see a 1-per-cent increase in garbage rates while commercial properties, schools and other properties will see a 5.2-per-cent increase — the same increases as in 2017.

For a residential property consuming the average amount of water, the 5-per-cent hike will cost an additional $47 for a total $989 annual water bill in 2018.

Commercial properties will pay an additional $18,113, for a $380,373 total in 2018.

The city’s rate-supported budgets are approved first in the budget process. Council members will debate the 2018 operating and capital budgets into the new year, with final approval in February.
