York Region secondary students continue to outdo the provincial average when it comes to standardized testing.
The Education Quality and Assessment Office released the school board and individual school results of the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test and Grade 9 mathematics tests this week.
Students in both the York Region District and the York Catholic District School boards outdid the provincial averages by successfully meeting or exceeding the standards.
“We believe this success is a result of the strong partnerships with parents and members of our school community, combined with our continued focus on student achievement and well-being,” YRDSB chairperson Anna DeBartolo said.
In the public board, 90 per cent of Grade 10 students were successful in meeting the average in literacy and 87 per cent of Grade 10 students in the separate board did the same, compared to the provincial average of 83 per cent.
For the Grade 9 mathematics assessment, 91 per cent in the academic stream, 57 per cent in applied reached the standard in the public board and 86 per cent in the academic and 52 per cent in applied met the standard in the separate board.
The provincial averages were 85 per cent in academic and 47 per cent in applied.
YCDSB Director of Education Patricia Preston said that while she’s pleased her board’s students outpaced their provincial counterparts, there remains more work to be done.
