A new trail is on the verge of coming to the Harvest Hills subdivision in Sharon. Earlier this year, council approved the Peggy’s Wood Trail that will connect to Newmarket’s Dave Kerwin Trail.

The town gave residents a look at the new trail’s alignment at public information centre Monday and hopes to begin construction in the fall.

“(Residents) are absolutely excited,” said Councillor Tara Roy-DiClemente, who also serves as liaison to the town’s trails advisory committee.

The new trail will provide residents with a better connection to Newmarket, she added.

The entrance for the new trail will be off Nature Way Crescent, which is just east of Bathurst Street and Green Lane West. The trail runs through properties owned by the Town of East Gwillimbury and York Region.

Town staff recently met with the region and Nature Conservancy of Canada and the three parties agreed on a trail alignment. This particular section of trail will run within the Peggy’s Wood Nature Reserve and provide access to Newmarket and the southern edge of East Gwillimbury.

The Town of Newmarket finished construction of the Dave Kerwin trail in 2013.

Beyond the Peggy’s Wood Trail, the town also envisions a new path along Green Lane from west of Lady Gwillim Avenue down toward Yonge Street, with the ultimate goal of reaching the East Gwillimbury GO Transit station.

It has already gone to tender, Roy-DiClemente said.

Residents can look forward to even more new trail infrastructure coming online in the next few years, she noted.
