Working smoke alarms save lives.
That’s the message Central York Fire Services will convey to the public during National Fire Prevention Week beginning Oct. 5.
Residents should be testing smoke alarms every month as well as ensuring there is a working alarm on every floor of their home.
Established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, Fire Prevention Week is a one-week public information blitz that focuses on public education and fire safety. Last year’s theme was preventing kitchen fires.
To spread the word, CYFS ihosts two open houses where visitors will be treated to morning coffee and doughnuts, a barbecue lunch and fire safety activities and information, vehicle rescue demonstrations, rides on the Tim Hortons Express Train, fire trucks, the fire safety wheel, arts, crafts and Sparky the fire dog.
Aurora: Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the CYFS Fire Station 4-4, 1344 Wellington St. E. with parking available at the Stronach Recreation Complex where the Tim Hortons train will be available as a shuttle.
Newmarket: Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at CYFS Fire Station 4-1, 984 Gorham St. with parking available at Cedarview Communtiy Church.
Donations will be accepted at the open house with proceeds benefitting Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation.
