The Barrie Fire Combat Team was honoured by city council Monday for its gold medal at the Toronto Honda Indy event this past July.
The team of city firefighters Max Laframboise, Cam McLeod, Brian Klassen and Jason Barker was in second place after the preliminary round.
During the knock-out rounds, the firefighters beat the County of Brant, Vaughan, Toronto and Montreal.
They beat Hamilton in the final to win the gold medal.
Next is the World Challenge in Phoenix, Nov. 3-9.
The Firefighter Combat Challenge is an extreme physical test based upon tasks commonly performed by firefighters in emergency situations.
City firefighters compete in these events on their own time, and take vacation or arrange shift changes so that they can attend these events and represent Barrie, while paying for their own travel and accommodations.
