Are you in favour of a York University satellite campus right here in Markham?

Following last week’s announcement of the proposed Markham location and funding commitments for a proposed campus, York University is asking for your support.

“We need everyone’s voice to build the case that York Region should be home to a new campus,” York University president and vice-chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri said in a statement on Monday.

“York Region is at the heart of Ontario’s new knowledge economy and one of the fastest growing major urban centres. A new campus would help to address increasing demand, as almost 60 per cent of young people in York Region go on to attend university and they should be able to fulfill their academic aspirations close to home.”

To show support for the bid, you can visit www.yestoyork.ca to tell elected officials - particularly Premier Kathleen Wynne and Reza Moridi, the Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities - to “Say Yes to York.”

To become involved through social media channels such as Twitter and Facebook, use the hashtag #yestoyork.

You can also sign up for email updates until the final decision is made by the province regarding the bid, expected to be announced in spring 2015.

York University will submit its bid by Sept. 26 in partnership with the Regional Municipality of York, the City of Markham and academic partner Seneca College.

The location, which sits north of Hwy. 407 between Warden Avenue and Kennedy Road, was selected by virtue of being in the core of a robust urban centre with easy access to transit, major employers, research centres and Markham's Pan Am Centre.
