When Dr. Cabbie opens in theatres Sept. 19, audiences will recognize the film’s stars such as Vinay Virmani, Kunal Nayyar and Andrianne Palicki. However, playing an important role behind the scenes is Thornhill choreographer Jorie Brown.

“Dr. Cabbie is the story about an immigrant doctor from India whose educational credentials as a doctor are not recognized in North America and he’s forced to drive a cab,” explained the Westmount collegiate graduate and dancer when asked about the plot.

“But his real love is to be a doctor, so he opens up a mobile clinic inside his cab,” she continued with a smile about the social comedy.

“Being in the industry, I was just called upon to be part of this really fun production and it was something new and different; and new challenges really excite me,” added Brown, who is also the head coach and choreographer for the Toronto Argonauts cheerleading squad.

According to Virmani, Dr. Cabbie’s lead actor, the Thornhill choreographer played a key supporting role in the Canadian film, which was co-produced by Bollywood superstar, Salman Khan.

“In an Indian household, music is a part of everything we do; and Jorie did some amazing choreography for us,” said Virmani, a former York University student.

“A lot of us, we’re not dancers at all, but she really made us dance and look good, which was great,” added the 29-year-old actor, who is perhaps best known for his role in the 2011 film Breakaway, starring alongside Rob Lowe and Russell Peters.

The film also stars Kunal Nayyar of the Big Bang Theory, who will be making his big screen debut and Andrianne Palicki, who is known for her roles on Friday Night Lights and the 2013 blockbuster, G.I. Joe: Retaliation.

“This is a film that is a complete family entertainer. It has something for everybody,” said Virmani.

“We hope to make people laugh and we hope to bring attention to some important issues,” he added. “I really hope that we see a diverse group of audiences going to enjoy this film.”
