It’s time to give more consideration to what you’re throwing in the trash.

Aurora council has approved a new waste bylaw that doesn’t reduce service levels, but addresses illegal dumping of waste and encourages you to drop off materials such as batteries at York Region depots.

No, clear garbage bags aren’t coming into the picture just yet, but you will need to be more careful with the potentially hazardous materials you’re tossing out.

The bylaw proposal came before council in June, but councillors quickly raised concerns that no requirements were set for garbage being put in bins.

As per the previous bylaw, residents are still allowed to put up to three garbage bags or containers at the end of the driveway.

The bylaw adds up to five bulk items to that total.

The new bylaw has a requirement to put garbage in a plastic, waterproof bag before it is put into a receptacle such as a garbage bin, while the previous bylaw would allow individual pieces of garbage to be thrown in, Aurora’s infrastructure and environmental services director Ilmar Simanovskis explained in his most recent report.

The change is a way to address health and safety concerns brought forth by collection personnel.

For other clarification, town solicitor Warren Mar assured council there are no changes being made to commercial pickup.
