This summer Shadowpath Theatre and Hesperus Village have collaborated to offer free drama workshops for seniors, thanks New Horizon’s grant from the federal government.

The workshops are offered on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 11 a.m. to noon, said artistic producer of Shadowpath, Alex Karolyi.

These drama sessions started in June 2014 and consist of playreading, storytelling, improvisation and drama games, he added.

The New Horizon’s program provides funding for projects that encourage seniors to play an important role in their communities by volunteering, participating in or leading community activities.

The funds were used to develop drama workshops for the Hesperus residents and seniors in the community and assisted in the building of a portable stage at Hesperus to support the arts, entertainment and performance. Shadowpath, based in Richmond Hill, is a registered charitable organization and has been producing theatre in York Region since 2002. On top of producing professional theatre productions, and developing fun, educational workshops, Shadowpath aims to create artistic spaces out of everyday places.

Hesperus Village, located in Vaughan, is a seniors’ affordable housing residence offering an independent lifestyle and a rich quality of life. Hesperus balances the strengths of an independent living organization with the nurturing aspects of a caring community.

Funding ensured Shadowpath drama workshops would be offered for eight months, at Hesperus Village, 1 Hesperus Rd., Thornhill, at Bathurst and Rutherford and continue until February of 2015.
