Durham workers approve tentative deal

Durham Region inside workers who have been on strike since June 19 have ratified a new collective agreement.

In posting the news on its website, CUPE Local 1764 did not indicate how many of the approximately 1,600 affected workers had voted in favour of the deal.

The agreement will now go the regional council for a vote, and if approved, the municipality east of Toronto has said employees could be back at work as early as Friday.

No details of the deal reached with a mediator early Tuesday have been released.

The employees covered by the agreement provide services in such areas as child care, court services, public health inspections and traffic operations.

Paramedics in Durham Region are also represented by the union, but are required to keep working to provide essential services.

The last contract expired March 31.
