Gila Martow took the oath of office Monday as a Member of Provincial Parliament, representing the riding of Thornhill.

The oath was administered by David C. Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, in his office during a private ceremony, attended by members of Martow’s family, staff and friends.

Martow has experienced quite a journey getting to this point.

On election night, the unofficial results showed Liberal candidate Sandra Yeung Racco had won the Thornhill riding by 85 votes.

But, Elections Ontario later announced that an election night mistake had occurred, saying Martow was the true winner and blaming the mistake on a data transposition error.

Yeung Racco requested a judicial recount and that official Elections Ontario recount June 23 and 24 showed Martow won by more votes than she did in the official election June 12 — earning 106 votes more than Yeung Racco.

Martow is familiar with the work involved in being an MPP. After Peter Shurman resigned as MPP for Thornhill, Gila Martow won a byelection back in February. When sworn in as MPP earlier this year, she was the only Jewish MPP from the PC Party.

In addition to her role as Thornhill’s Member of Provincial Parliament, Martow will serve as the opposition PC Party’s Francophone Affairs critic, Intergovernmental Affairs critic and GTA Issues critic.
