York regional police have charged a woman for leaving her golden retriever inside a hot locked car in Vaughan on Monday.

Police say they received a call about a dog in distress at a shopping plaza parking lot at 71 Collosus Dr., in the area of Highway 7 and Weston Road, around 6:30 p.m.

On arrival they spotted a 10-month-old golden retriever locked inside a Toyota Corolla with the windows rolled up.

“The dog was lethargic, panting heavily and had no water,” police said in a release.

Police say they were about to break the window to save the animal when the owner showed up and unlocked the door.

The dog was assessed by animal control officers and was found to show signs of distress and dehydration.

The dog was seized by Vaughan Animal Services officers and its owner, Bei Wang, was charged with causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.

She’s scheduled to appear in a Newmarket court on July 24.
