Scarpitti registers for re-election run in Markham
Incumbent is only candidate for mayor's chair so far

As the summer heats up, so too is the municipal election race.

Markham now has a candidate for mayor, incumbent mayor Frank Scarpitti.

Scarpitti was first elected to Markham council in 1985 as a regional councillor and was first elected mayor in 2006.

He received more than 85 per cent of the vote in the 2010 municipal election with more than 54,000 votes.

The race for regional councillor is also heating up, with eight registered candidates including incumbent regional councillors Jack Heath, Jim Jones and Joe Li.

The regional council race also includes Nirmala Armstrong, Bin Chang, Ivy Lee, Tammy Mok and Peter Pavlovic.

The four candidates with the most votes will represent you at the region.

There is also a candidate running for the French Catholic school board, Kathleen Beal.

The Ontario municipal election is Oct. 27.
