York police received a call this morning from a concerned motorist about a black bovine standing in the road.

Before 9:30 a.m., police were on Jane Street near the sighting, just north of King Road in King Township, to find the farm animal.

It was eventually discovered in a grassy field after being spotted by a news helicopter.

A farm animal on the road is not an uncommon occurrence in King Township or wider York Region, given the agricultural nature of many communities, Const. Andy Pattenden said.

The animal was initially reported to be a bull, though York Regional Police later tweeted that it was a heifer.

Crashing into a bovine can potentially kill, he said.

"It would be a lot worse than hitting a deer," he said. "I haven't heard of one, but it could happen."
