Richmond Hill, Thornhill students excel in national music contest

The Canadian Music Competition has announced the grand prize winners in this year’s competition and first place honours in each age and instrument categories.

Several Richmond Hill and Thornhill musicians performed well in the July national competition.

Katie Chan of Richmond Hill earned top marks in violin, for children age 8.

Harmony Zhu of Richmond Hill was highest performer in piano for children age 9.

Alexander Volkov of Thornhill achieved highest marks among 19-year-old violinists.

The winners share more than $35,000 in scholarship money to help them further their musical educations.

Some 268 musicians aged 7-30 competed in this year’s National Final in Quebec City in early July.

Close to 500 musicians began the competition at regional rounds across the country. The best advanced to provincial finals, where they had to earn a minimum score of 85 per cent to qualify for the national final.

The Canadian Music Competition is Canada’s premiere music competition for young classical performers, aiming to nurture Canada’s future professional musicians.
