The Vaughan Relay For Life is trying out a new format this year. Teams of 10 will walk for five hours instead of walking overnight until 7 a.m. the next morning.

All of the heartfelt elements of Relay will still be there: The Opening Ceremonies will feature the Survivor Victory Lap, a lap walked only by cancer survivors and their caregivers; the Luminary (candlelighting) Ceremony will take place at 10 p.m. with people sharing their cancer stories. At midnight, all participants and volunteers will walk the final lap together.

Teams can be made up of colleagues, family members or friends. During the five hours, participants are fed and entertained. Local entertainers take the stage until 11 p.m., followed by karaoke.

The 2014 Vaughan Relay For Life will take place Friday, June 20 at Jan Paderewski Park on Hwy. 7, south of Major Mackenzie, in Vaughan. It’s a private park owned by the Polish Army Veterans, who have granted the Canadian Cancer Society use of all facilities for the evening. The park features 25 lush acres.

Anyone can start a team of friends, family or co-workers, People of all ages are invited to participate. Teams have already started signing up atrelayforlife.ca/vaughan.
