York Regional Police believe they have wounded a possible coyote during an encounter in Thornhill Monday.

Police were called to Evergreen Crescent after receiving calls of two animals resembling coyotes that were menacing residents.

At one point, a homeowner used a rake to fend off the animals, police said.

When police arrived on the scene, they were attacked and used pepper spray to repel the animals, which fled into a wooded area.

Members of the emergency task force and the OSPCA tried to find and subdue the animals.

At about 1:15 p.m., a firearm was discharged and it is believed one of the animals was shot in the upper shoulder area, but both fled deeper into the woods.

Later in the day, two aggressive animals were reported in the King’s College Road and Green Lane area as two women were attacked in that incident.

However, police were unable to find any animals.

The women, who were attacked between 4 and 4:30 p.m., suffered minor injuries.

Police are warning resident in the area bordered by Hwy. 407, Hwy. 404, John Street and Bayview Avenue to be aware that these animals may still be in the area.

You are reminded to call police and not to feed or approach the animals.

If you have seen the animals, call police at 1-866-876-5423 or 9-1-1.
