The Emerald Ash Borer is putting ash trees in Owen Sound in jeopardy.

City Parks manager John Howard brought a plan for coping with the bug to council. Howard says about 40 per cent of the trees in Owen Sound are ash, but by the year 2021 most could be gone.

Howard says the first part of the plan is to inventory all the trees in the city. He says they’ll try to save some of the older ash trees with an insecticide, but that only postpones the problem because the treatment only lasts two years.

People are encouraged to start planting new trees other than ash to maintain the tree canopy.
