Milos Raonic became the first Canadian man in the Open Era to reach the Round of 16 at the French Open after defeating Gilles Simon of France 4-6, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 in Paris Friday.

The 23-year-old Thornhill resident, the tournament’s eighth seed, showed his character in overcoming a two sets to one deficit in a match that lasted more than three hours.

Serving for the match at 5-4 in the fifth set, Raonic was broken by Simon, who was ranked 30th in the ATP rankings, before regrouping to break right away at 5-5 and successfully serving out the match on his second try.

Raonic awaits the winner of the match between Marcel Granollers of Spain and Martin Klizan of Slovakia.
