York Region is nearing the finish line on a $564-million wastewater servicing project.
The region recently celebrated a big breakthrough as the final tunnel-boring machine completed work on the new 15-kilometre southeast collector trunk sewer tunnel. The trunk sewer will accommodate additional sewer flows, permitting future and approved growth in York and Durham regions, while also allowing the existing southeast collector to be inspected and repaired as needed.
York Regional chairperson and CEO Bill Fisch described the sewer project as ambitious and said it was gratifying to see it in the final stages of completion after more than a decade.
The construction phase has been ongoing for 33 months and the final stages of work will involve finishing all of the access shafts, completion of odour control facilities and restoration of the surface.
The region anticipates the southeast collector trunk sewer will be operational by the end of the year.
