York Regional Police last Wednesday and Thursday pulled more than 140 commercial vehicles off the road and handed out hundreds of tickets to drivers in Vaughan whose rides had mechanical defects or safety violations.
The local police force’s commercial motor vehicle safety unit, in partnership with the ministry of transportation and other GTA police services, held a two-day blitz last week targeting commercial vehicles.
A total of 370 vehicles were inspected and of those, 143 or 38.6 per cent, were taken out of service.
Thirty vehicles had such significant defects the licence plates were removed and they were towed for repair.
Police also handed out tickets for 233 commercial motor vehicle violations including insecure loads, improper tires, improper braking systems and documentation offences.
Seventeen people were arrested during the blitz, 14 of them for immigration act violations.
