York Region job postings in 2013 indicate available full-time positions are higher than the national average.

To understand and assess the current job market, the region monitors and analyses trends in job postings across our nine municipalities.

An important measure of economic activity within York Region, these postings provide insight into the number of postings, positions available, in-demand occupations and key hiring employers.

Employment opportunities within York Region are enhanced by the number and variety of businesses choosing to do business here, York Region chairperson and CEO Bill Fisch said.

York Region attracts strong businesses and an equally strong workforce to support those employers, he added.

Between January and December 2013:

As part of the Economic Development Action Plan, the region’s economic strategy branch works with employers to help create a viable and advantageous businesses environment, Newmarket Regional Councillor and planning and economic development chairperson John Taylor said.

Developed to complement the municipal economic strategies already in place, the plan benefits residents and businesses across the entire region, he said.

The selection of jobs offered in 2013 aligns with the region’s labour force demographics.

York Region is Canada’s second-largest information and communications technology cluster and job postings within that area reflect this trend.

Computer and information systems professionals were the most in-demand group, representing 7 per cent or 3,000 of the total employment listings.

There are an estimated 3,900 information and communications technology businesses based in York Region, including IBM, AMD, CGI and Compugen, as well as additional small and mid-size technology businesses.
