What is the difference between a print and a reproduction?

How high should I hang a painting?

Organizers of the Heintzman House Art Show & Sale have added an extra feature this year: Handouts that help people with art-related problems or decorating questions such as these.

This year’s show, running this Friday through Sunday, includes 38 artists and more than 600 works of original art.

The art and craft show was started in the 1970s, by the Heintzman House auxiliary as a way to raise money for the upkeep of the heritage house.

Located east of Yonge Street in Thornhill at 135 Bay Thorn Dr., the Heintzman House is a designated Ontario Heritage property.

Elizabeth Rowe has contributed to the Heintzman House Show and Sale for nine years and now helps with publicity and advertising.

Here are her words of advice: While two artists may use the same medium, don’t expect their work to be at all similar.

“There is a variety of art. Each person has their own style,” she said.

She paints in oil, acrylic and watercolour and also does print making. She had been part of the Richmond Hill Group of Artists and Studio Artists of Thornhill.

“Some paint in an abstract way. Others are conservative and do scenery and floral paintings,” she said.

Certain artists put different mediums together and work on collages.

Ms Rowe has noticed a distinct difference in the artistic selections between customers from more mature neighbourhoods, who already have art in their homes, versus younger customers. The customers from mature neighbourhoods look for art that fits within their home.

“Young people have a different view. Young people are chosing different types of art. Some don’t even frame it. It is a cleaner, more modern art.”

Another piece of advice from Ms Rowe: Don’t be surprised if you see umbrellas in the solarium of the Heintzman House.

The umbrellas are purposely placed there to prevent the house from getting too warm and to prevent glare on the glass of artwork.
