While local golf courses are hopeful of an Easter weekend start to the season, the opening of 200-plus sports fields in Vaughan has been delayed until May 5 because of the long winter season.

City staff have evaluated the condition of the natural turf fields and have determined there will be a two-week delay to the start of the baseball and soccer seasons due to the current state of the fields.

The playing fields will continue to be evaluated over the next few weeks, city staff says. You can read updates here at yorkregion.com and in The Vaughan Citizen each Thursday.

Vaughan maintains the sports fields across the city. These fields receive extensive fertilization, aeration, overseeding, top dressing and mowing to maintain quality sports turf, according to the city. Irrigation is managed on premium fields by a central computer system which also assists in a reduction of water consumption. The fields are routinely inspected in order to maintain high quality turf for all users.
