Vaughan aquatic staff captured 28 medals at the 2014 Ontario Lifesaving Sport Championships.
The Vaughan team was recognized with special presentation at the council meeting Tuesday.
For the third consecutive year, the Vaughan Masters teams retained the title of Provincial Champions. The team won 16 gold, seven silver and five bronze medals. The 2014 championships, held in Tillsonburg, attracted the largest field of masters athletes to date.
The Canadian Lifesaving Society is the governing body for the sport of lifesaving and organizes annual championships based on the skills needed for real world rescues. Competition events included a mannequin tow, obstacle swim, line throw and tow with fins.
“On behalf of the entire City, I would like to offer my congratulations to our aquatics staff for their impressive achievements,” said Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua. “We take great pride in the recreation programs and services we offer to our community. They are diverse and provide a wide variety of opportunities for all ages and abilities. It is gratifying to know that we have a dedicated and highly skilled group of people who support these programs. Your commitment to aiming higher and seeking to be the very best in your field is inspiring and something we all admire and appreciate.”
