More than 7,500 people have downloaded York Region’s Travel Alert application in its first year, council heard last week.

A council report to council detailed the performance of the app during the one-year pilot period.

Travel Alert is a hands-free smartphone application intended to inform you about potential traffic problems on the way to your destinations.

The app is an important tool to help motorists avoid traffic congestion whenever possible.

Using voice alerts, the app alerts motorists of traffic issues along their route, such as collisions and road work.

It also lets you know when you are entering community safety and school zones and urges you to reduce their speed.

The app is one of several tools the region uses to ease traffic congestion.

With the population of the region projected to reach 1.5 million people by 2031, it will be important to help motorists save time and get around efficiently, politicians have said.

Other initiatives meant to combat congestion include Smart Commute, traffic signal timing through the centralized traffic control centre, high-occupany vehicle lanes and the York Region Transit/Viva bus rapidways.
