Crews have been working on a Bathurst Street watermain break around the clock in bitter cold temperatures since Monday at 7 a.m. and the main road is expected to be closed until Thursday.
The stretch of Bathurst bordering Richmond Hill and Vaughan is closed south of McCallum Drive on the Richmond Hill side and Vista Valley Drive in Thornhill Vaughan, south to Stockdale Crescent due to the watermain break.
A sanitary line was also broken. Workers are cutting about 200 meters, about 650 feet, of asphalt across Bathurst Street to replace the mains.
Electronic message signs have been installed and York Regional Police are helping direct motorists during peak commuting hours.
Motorists are advised to take alternate north-south routes such as Dufferin Street to the west or Yonge Street to the east of Bathurst Street.
Local road access will be maintained while emergency repairs are being made and crews expect to be finished sometime on Thursday.
Extreme weather can cause the ground to swell and contract, placing excessive pressure on the watermains, causing any weakened pipe to break.
