The doors to Kleinburg's first Catholic school could swing open just over a year from now.

Education Minister Liz Sandals visited the village Friday afternoon to announce the provincial government is putting up $11.8 million to build a new elementary school in the Huntington Road and Major Mackenzie Drive area, where hundreds of homes are  being built.

"We believe that we need to invest in people, invest in infrastructure and invest in jobs," Ms Sandals said. "And when you think about education, the invest in people part is really, really clear because we know that we are investing in our children and investing in their future when we invest in education."

The school is expected to house approximately 600 students from junior kindergarten to Grade 8.

"I think this is fantastic news," Vaughan MPP Steven Del Duca said. "Vaughan is one of the fastest growing communities that we have in the province of Ontario and today's announcement of nearly $12 million, from the ministry of education, in Kleinburg west, is a clear indication that the Ontario Liberal government is continuing to invest in the crucial public infrastructure that we need to make sure our kids our educated properly and to make sure  that we continue to create meaningful jobs."

York Catholic District School Board hopes the school will be up and running by September 2015.

"The Kleinburg area (and) the Nashville area is definitely growing and, I believe we have several sites, this will just be the first school that we build in that area," Elizabeth Crowe, school board chairperson, said. "We're going to try to fast track this. Our original request was for 2016, but we understand we can build it sooner. The sooner the better because the houses are going up."

Meanwhile, Ms Sandals was also in Markham to announce construction of a new public high school in the growing Cornell area near Markham Stouffville Hospital and a public grade school nearby. The secondary school will cost $36 million and the grade school, $12 million.
