Earth Hour is Saturday and the Region of York is encouraging you to turn out your lights and participate in the World Wildlife Fund’s annual climate change awareness campaign.
To mark the occasion, the region will power down all non-essential lights for an hour in four primary locations beginning at 8:30 p.m. You can expect to see the lights go out at the York Region Administration Centre on Yonge Street in Newmarket, south services centre on High Tech Road in Richmond Hill and transportation and EMS operations centres on Bales Drive in East Gwillimbury.
Every year millions of people take part in Earth Hour, which is cited as the world’s largest climate change movement for action.
Last year, Hydro One recorded electricity savings of 448 megawatts in Ontario during Earth Hour, enough to power about 300,000 homes.
York Region urges you to do your part in support of Earth Hour by turning off all lights, TVs, computers and other non-essential devices that use electricity Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.
