York Region has been recognized with three Ontario Public Works Association awards for outstanding quality and service.
The region received the association’s 2013 Project of the Year Award for Environment, in the $2-million to $10-million division, for the Uplands Emergency Repair Project, which necessitated installing a sanitary bypass and repairing a section of a concrete pipe in a speedy and efficient manner that restored full capacity.
The repair was required after a portion of pipe was separated under a creek that flows into the Little Don River, resulting in groundwater pouring into a sewer.
York also took home the 2013 Project of the Year Award for Structures, in the $10-million to $50-million division, for completing the Keswick Water Pollution Control Plant outfall expansion project with minimal environmental impact.
Growth in the community necessitated the plant outfall expansion and the it was also completed ahead of schedule and under the allotted budget.
Finally, the emergency repair of the Bayview Pumping Station West Watermain Project was acknowledged with the 2013 association’s Project of the Year Award for Disaster/Emergency Construction/Repair in the $2-million to $10-million division. The nod stems from the design and successful completion of a vital emergency repair system after a watermain leak was discovered under Hwy. 407 in February 2012.
Safeguarding the environment is at the forefront of every regional project and to receive awards recognizing excellence in public works and environmental protection is an honour, Richmond Hill Regional Councillor and environmental services chairperson Vito Spatafora said.
“Work of this calibre is how York Region operates every single day.”
