Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua hasn’t officially declared his intention to seek re-election in Vaughan and that’s fuelling speculation he’s considering running to be chairperson of York Region.
But that’s not the case, at all, he says. "I think that campaigning and governing aren’t a good mix,” Mr. Bevilacqua said in an interview today. “I think what you need to do is have the shortest possible campaign period. I think that focusing on governing is much more important than campaigning, right now.”
Mr. Bevilacqua said he will likely file his nomination papers for mayor in September, just as he did back in 2010.
So far, Whitchurch-Stouffville Mayor Wayne Emmerson is the only person to express interest in taking over the post being vacated by longtime York Region chairperson Bill Fisch, who announced he is stepping down at the end of this term.
The position will be filled by appointment again in 2014 since a move to have voters directly elect the region’s top political post has stalled at the provincial level.
