The city is getting set to unveil the first draft of proposed policies aimed at regulating basement apartments in Vaughan.

And you are being invited to share your thoughts.

A public open house is being held Wednesday, April 2 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., in the multi-purpose room at city hall, 2141 Major Mackenzie Dr.

City staff will be seeking feedback on proposed policies to guide where and how so-called secondary suites - such as basement apartments, self-contained apartments above garages and garden apartments - will be permitted in Vaughan.

Currently, these types of units are illegal in the city, but the provincial government has mandated that municipalities across Ontario adopt policies to permit and regulate secondary suites.

Dozens of people who turned up at city hall for a meeting on the contentious issue back in December raised myriad concerns about allowing basement apartments including inadequate parking, unkempt yards, lower property values and mountains of garbage piling up at the curbside.
