Four York Region residents will hit the hardwood court for their respective collegiate basketball teams later this week for the annual March Madness tournament.
Thornhill resident Andrew Wiggins, touted as one of the top freshman players, will lead the second-ranked University of Kansas Jayhawks in their second round game against 15th seed Eastern Kentucky University in St. Louis Friday starting at around 4:10 p.m. EDT.
The six-foot, eight-inch guard and former Vaughan Secondary School student led the Jayhawks in scoring with a 17.4 points a game average.
He was also named the Big 12 Conference’s Freshman of the Year.
Wiggins’ older brother, Nick, will be part of the Wichita State University Shockers’ team that is undefeated and was selected as the top seed in the Midwest bracket.
A six-foot, six-inch guard who is in his senior year and also played at Vaughan Secondary School, Nick averaged 5.1 points a game this past season.
The Shockers, who were in last year’s Final Four, will face the winner of the Cal Poly-Texas Southern University play in game, Friday in St. Louis at 7:10 p.m. EDT.
Holland Landing’s Kevin Pangos will be part of the eighth-seeded Gonzaga University Bulldogs’ when they face ninth seed Oklahoma State University in San Diego Friday at 4:40 p.m. EDT.
A six-foot, two-inch guard who started in every game this past season and a former Dr. J.M. Denison Secondary School graduate, Pangos is in his junior year and was the Bulldogs’ second-leading scorer who averaged 14.1 points a game.
Thornhill resident Stefan Nastic will be utilizing his skills in the low post as a member of the 10th seeded Stanford University Cardinal in their game against seventh seed University of New Mexico Lobos in St. Louis Friday at 1:40 p.m. EDT.
A six-foot, 11-inch centre, the Thornhill Secondary School graduate is a redshirt junior and averaged 7.0 points a game.
