Get ready for the return of the wet stuff on Wednesday, with a tricky commute expected throughout the final day of winter as rain or freezing rain is expected to fall throughout the GTA.

Adding to commuter headaches was the shutdown of parts of the southbound Don Valley Parkway following a fatal collision near Dundas St. early Wednesday morning. One person died in the crash, which has close the DVP’s southbound lanes at Bayview Ave. and Bloor St.

Rain is expected to start at 7 a.m., with a risk of freezing rain as the day evolves. Southerly winds with gusts of 20 km/h are forecast, according to Environment Canada, with a morning high of 1C and a daytime high of 5C in the afternoon. Winds should pick up into the night, with gusts of up to 50 km/h, and more rain.

Toronto remains under a special weather statement while a freezing rain warning is in effect in Durham Region, York Region, Caledon, Newmarket and several other parts of southern Ontario.

School buses in Simcoe County, Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton have been cancelled because of the threat of freezing rain.

Though spring starts Thursday, the day will feel like much of this winter with light and blowing snow expected before possible rain showers or flurries in the afternoon.

Ahead of the turbulent weather, there were fewer than 10 cancellations in and out of Pearson International Airport as of 6 a.m. and none reported at Billy Bishop Airport.

The TTC and GO Transit also are reporting no major delays in operations early on. VIA Rail says a First Nations railroad blockade in the Napanee area, between Belleville and Kingston, are affecting trains both ways along the Toronto-Montreal and Toronto-Ottawa routes.
