The hunt is on for the company that will build Vaughan’s first hospital.

Infrastructure Ontario and Mackenzie Health today issued a request for qualifications to design, build, finance and maintain a new “state-of-the-art” hospital on city-owned land at Major Mackenzie Drive and Jane Street.

"Today's announcement brings Mackenzie Health yet another step closer to the opening of the Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital in 2019 and to realizing its vision of creating a world class health experience for the people of our community," Dina Palozzi, chairperson of Mackenzie Health board of directors, said in a news release.

The request for qualifications is the first step in the process.

Submissions will be reviewed to pre-qualify project teams with the design and construction experience as well as the qualified personnel and financial ability to deliver the project, expected to cost around $1 billion.

Construction is slated to begin in 2015 and the hospital’s doors are expected to open in 2019.

It is anticipated the hospital will have about 350 beds and offer a range of specialized services such as birthing (obstetrics), pediatrics, mental health and the York Region District Stroke Centre, in addition to an emergency department and other core health-care services.
