In recognition of Black History Month, Vaughan residents and visitors are invited to celebrate Black Canadian heritage, traditions and achievements.
Events and activities were held last Saturday at the Dufferin Clark Community Centre in Thornhill and more activities are set for this Sunday, Feb. 9.
Black History Month celebrations support the city’s Diversity Strategy, which aims to create opportunities for creative cultural expression and dialogue.
The Vaughan African Canadian Association in collaboration with the Black Foundation of Community Networks hosted Saturday’s events that featured entertainment, guest speakers and live drumming, as well as a tribute to the life and times of Nelson Mandela.
This Sunday, the African Caribbean association will present a short film entitled Africville – Can’t Stop Now from 2 to 4 p.m. in the multi-purpose room at Vaughan City Hall.
The film, with rare and archival footage, offers a glimpse into the life and times of Africville residents and their personal and community-based life journeys. Presentation highlights also include poetry readings and guest speakers celebrating black Canadian history. Refreshments will be served.
