Winterfest
The City of Vaughan’s 25th annual WinterFest will be held on Sunday, Feb. 9 at the Vellore Village Community Centre, located at 1 Villa Royale Avenue.

This fun-filled event will take place from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and feature free outdoor and indoor activities including outdoor stage entertainment, a midway zone and much more.  Great food will also be available for purchase.

 

Chai Tea and a Movie
The Toronto Jewish Film Festival continues its popular Chai Tea & A Movie series on Feb. 9 with Igor and the Cranes’ Journey, a film by Evgeny Ruman (Lenin in October). The film received much acclaim at the 2012 Chicago International Children’s Film Festival, and won a Special Mention Award at the 2012 Haifa International Film Festival.

This much-loved family film will screen at The City Playhouse Theatre located at 1000 New Westminster Drive in Vaughan (off Bathurst St., south of Highway 7). Doors Open for Tea at 4 p.m. and the film will begin at 5 p.m.  Tickets are $15, can be purchased in advance at www.tjff.com or by calling 416-324-9121 (please leave a message).

 

Valentine’s Dinner and Dance
A Valentines Dinner and Dance will be held on Feb. 15 at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 414 in Woodbridge beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 per person and music will be provided by Rob Martine. Branch 414 is located at 60 Legion Court in Woodbridge.

 

Caritas Out of the Darkness Walk for Recovery
Caritas, a therapeutic community residential program for the recovery and rehabilitation from addictions and concurrent disorders, will heighten awareness of today’s increasingly social problem with a two-kilometre trail walk.

The event will take place Sunday, Feb. 16 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Registration will be from 9 to 9:30 a.m. and the walk start and a candle ceremony will be held at 10 a.m.  The marshmallow roast finale will take place at 12:30 p.m.

The walk will begin at 15445 Weston Road in Kettleby.

Why walk? Statistics for addiction and mental health show that one in 10 Canadians 15-years of age and over report symptoms consistent with alcohol or illicit drug dependence, one in five Canadians will experience a mental illness in their lifetime, 70 per cent of mental health problems and illnesses have their onset during childhood or adolescence and young people age 15 to 24 are more likely to report mental illness and/or substance use disorders than other age groups.

St. Margaret Mary Church Dinner and Dance
St. Margaret Mary Church will be hosting its annual Dinner and Dance Gala on March 1 at DaVinci Banquet Hall, located at 5732 Highway 7 West in Woodbridge.

Red carpet arrival and cocktail reception is at 6 p.m.

The event promises to be an unforgettable evening and a celebration of community spirit with great entertainment and cuisine with family and friends in support of an amazing cause.

Earth Hour Vaughan is looking for Green Heroes
Earth Hour Vaughan is searching for green heroes: young, adult and families to recognize at the annual Earth Hour Vaughan event on March 29. Do you know of a person or family who takes care to save energy, water and waste very little?  Someone who practices reduce, re-use, recycle?  For instance, a student who turns out lights, brings reusable lunch containers, walks to school? A homeowner who has had the energy retrofit done on their home?  Installed energy efficient lighting? Installed solar panels?  Purchased an energy efficient furnace or water heater? Walks or takes transit, etc?

If so, you can nominate them to be an Earth Hour Vaughan 2014 Green Hero before March 22. Winners will be recognized and awarded a prize at the March 29 Earth Hour Vaughan event held in the evening at Vaughan City Hall.

Food Addicts in Recovery Anonymous holds weekly meetings every Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Woodbridge Pool and Memorial Arena, located at 5020 Highway 7 at the north west corner of Highway 7 and Islington Avenue.
